After writing my book, “Right Where You Belong,” I took notice of those who fully occupy their God-given spaces. The ones who stop wishing for a better life “out there” and make the most of the ones they have.

In the movie, “Ordinary Angels,” we are introduced to several real-life people who did what they could where they were, and the result saved a little girl’s life (spoiler ;). The primary heroine of the story is Sharon. I appreciate how they portray her recovery process into the movie. Beyond showing Sharon’s transition from addict to “savior,” the movie addresses when one has overstepped in an effort to help others. When helping becomes its own form of addiction. It’s such a needed conversation to discern when to step in and when to step back. Speaking of discussion, I love how the Ordinary Angels team created this discussion guide.

If you’re wondering whether you can watch with your kids or not, Common Sense Media says it’s for kids 11+ years old and it is a “Sentimental drama about alcoholism promotes perseverance.” There is also criticism about Sharon’s salon friend, Rose, who is an underdeveloped character and reinforces the cliche of “Best Black Friend.” If you have a child who is sensitive to health related content, this may be one to skip. There is a scene where the little girl waiting for a liver transplant throws up blood.

With few movies in theaters right now, I think “Ordinary Angels” is a great option if you want to be reminded of the part you play in communities and learn about a heartwarming true story.
