The world tells us another message…that we shouldn’t serve our families. We should outsource our responsibilities to free up time to do what we enjoy…watching T.V., reading a book, getting our nails done, shopping, etc. A modern-day mom should be self-serving and do what meets her needs.

My mom is a woman of action. Her primary love language is “acts of service.” She worked very hard to provide for our family and to “watch over the affairs of the household”. She did not “eat the bread of idleness” (Prov 31:27).

Elaborate Thanksgiving dinners

If you read through the section of Proverbs 31 describing a wife of noble character, you will note that most of the descriptions are verbs of what she “does”.  She: brings, selects, works, gets up, provides, considers, sees, holds, opens, extends, makes, clothes, speaks, watches. She is not idle. She is praised for the works of her hands.

When I think about my mom, I think of all the verbs, the things she did:

• Homeschooled my younger brother and I
• Made gourmet meals every night for dinner
• Filled the home with healthy foods
• Gave us the gift of performing arts (ballet, piano, acting lessons)
• Served others by providing meals and caring for their basic needs
• Taught women from the Word and discipled them
• Supported my father in multiple political campaigns
• Pulled weeds, planted and harvested from our garden
• Kept our home clean and organized
• Sewed clothes for herself if she couldn’t buy them
• Taught me home keeping skills…cooking, sewing, cleaning
• Encouraged and supported other women
• Planned fun outings and learning experiences

She is a wife and mother of noble character. Here is my chance to fulfill Proverbs 31: 28-29: “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.'”

As God-centered moms let us not eat the bread of idleness. Let us serve our families because of our great love for them and our love for Christ who humbly served and gave His life for us.
