I’ve noticed a new trend.
Whether it’s an Instagram post or Facebook status, people are verbalizing a desire to live “smaller” lives. Focusing less on everyone knowing everything, they want their close friends closer. Narrowing in on what really matters by living small.
Today’s podcast guest, Christie Elkins (Letters from the Nest), by default, found herself living “small”. Born in LaFollette, TN it has taken her a lifetime to embrace where God placed her. Then she went beyond embracing, to thriving and choosing to live even smaller.
I’m such a huge fan of this gal. Love her sweet accent, her heart, and how she has truly blossomed over the last couple years.
Listen to Christie and I chat about:
- Marrying her high school sweetheart & how a lady from the local community spelled out why they were a perfect match, going back generations
- What she did to embrace and bloom where she was planted
- How she is continuing a tradition her grandfather started
- How even in a small town you can desire a simpler life-what she did about it–their life homeschooling on a farm
- A viral post she wrote about a lie moms often believe–how big your role as a mom is in God’s eyes.

What a great podcast to listen to this morning! I think Christie must be my southern sister as our stories are very similar 🙂 I just wish I had all that acreage with my house! Living in a small town is definitely not something I wanted growing up…in fact my husband and I stayed in the “big city” after we attended college. It took about a year for me to realize it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, and I went right back up to my small hometown, where we live now. Surprisingly (or maybe not so) a lot of the people I went to high school with and vowed to leave this small town are all back here raising our families. Apparently we didn’t know what we were missing until we were actually away from it for a time!
thanks Heather for sharing your story! Yes, that line about the big city… “took a year for me to realize it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be”. So true! I’ve lived in an urban environment the last 15 years and I definitely miss having a place where “everybody knows your name”. blessings!! Have you connected with Christie online? I’m sure she’d love to meet you!
Did I miss something, I couldn’t seem find where to play the audio?
if you are on your phone it will be hard to play the audio…try using your podcast app (iphone) or stitcher app (other smart phones)to download the episode. Once you are in the app, simply search for “God Centered Mom” podcast and the interview should be in the list. thanks!
